INTRODUCTION
On 26 May 2025, the Supreme Court of India asked the Central Government to explain its stand on giving compensation to victims of child sexual abuse under the POCSO Act. The Court said it is very important that child victims get proper help and support. The Court took this step while hearing a public interest petition about better care for such children.
BACKGROUND
The petition was filed by a child rights NGO. It said that many children who suffer abuse under the POCSO Act do not get proper compensation. Even when courts say compensation should be given, in many cases, the money is delayed or not given at all. The petitioner asked the Court to make clear rules and hold the Government responsible for payment.
The Court heard the petition and agreed that this is a serious matter. The judges said that children who are victims already suffer a lot. If they don’t get the promised help from the Government, then it is like punishing them again.
KEY POINTS
- The Court asked the Centre to file a reply and explain what steps are taken to give compensation on time.
- The Court said compensation is not just money, but also a way to support victims in healing and recovery.
- The bench said the system should be child-friendly and work quickly so that the child victims are not troubled again.
- The Court also talked about the importance of giving psychological care and other help, along with money.
RECENT DEVELOPMENT
After the Court’s direction, many child rights activists welcomed the move. They said this is a good step to protect the rights of children. Legal experts also said the Court is trying to make sure that laws are not only written but also followed properly.
The Centre is now expected to reply in the next hearing and inform the Court how compensation is given and what changes can be made for faster help.
CONCLUSION
This action by the Supreme Court is a strong step to make sure that children under the POCSO Act are not forgotten after the case ends. Justice is not complete unless the victim gets proper support. The Court’s move shows that victims should be at the centre of justice, especially when they are children. This also reminds the Government that it must act quickly and not delay the help promised by law.
