Introduction

On 2nd  of August 2025, The Special Court for People’s Representatives, Karnataka, convicted a former M.P of Hassan, Prajwal Revanna , a devil who ruled the constituency with unjustifiable lust supported with  power, for a repeated rape of a 47 year old women, a domestic help, u/s 376(2)(k) and 376(2)(n)of IPC, and sentenced to life imprisonment with fine, giving justice for those who were silenced by the womaniser, Prajwal Revanna, who used the darker side of power which made justice, nothing but a far fetched dream for the victims.

This is a legal news about the heinous crime of silencing the victims. This is a legal news about  how abuse of power is a hindrance to justice  and this is a legal news that justice will always prevail over the kings and queens of darkness and they will always be prosecuted for injustice as far as the Indian judiciary exists. And that is why the congress leader in Karnataka termed it  as ‘worlds biggest sexual assault case’.

Back ground : A spot light into the past

This is a case which involved the life of thousands of women who were  victims of heinous, cruel and sexually cunning acts by a former MP of Hassan, Prajwal Revanna. The origin of the whole case developed during the 2023 elections where, the convict represented party, JD(S) got into alliance with national party BJP and in the same alliance BJP offered JD(S) 3 seats and one seat was occupied by the former Indian Prime Minister HD Deve Gowdas grandson the convict, Former M.P Prajwal Revanna. The event led to the reveal of worlds biggest sexual abuse case  as alleged by congressmen was when a pen drive with around 2,700 and more explicit videos of the then Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna was leaked without trace to the source. There were many doubts regarding who leaked them. While many said that it was leaked as part of a political game and others opined that it is a pure game for financial gain. But whatever the intent was, even though justice was showered on convict, the victims once again failed as their identities were also revealed to the public.

It was based on the complaint filed by a domestic helper of Revanna’s house, a 47 year old lady, that led to the former MP’s conviction. The lady was silenced and suppressed by convicts political power and kept the injustice to herself. The day when the implicit sexual videos of the convict were leaked, knowing the fact that many other women also were also victims of the heinous acts of the convict, with her family’s support she gained courage to file a police complaint and SIT filed a 1,632 page charge sheet with 113 witnesses in September 2024 . Later, earlier in this year, the special court had framed charges against the convict under sections 376(2)(k) (raping a woman over whom one has control or power), 376(2)(n) (repeatedly raping the same woman), 354A (sexual harassment), 354B (disrobing a woman), 354C (voyeurism), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 201 (destruction of evidence) of the then Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66E (violation of privacy) of the Information Technology Act.

Legal Proceeding : Where Justice was truly honored

This is a case which has pointed out how digital and technical evidences in the developed IT era helps the courts in providing justice. The court in the legal proceeding also pointed out the importance of relying on the essential statement of the prosecution witnesses, especially the witness statement of the victim in rape cases. This case is a spotlight which once again points out the importance of efficient and effective work the law enforcement  team have to do in support of the prosecution case.

The trial  of the case in the Special Court for MPs/ MLAs in Bengaluru started on May 2 of 2025 even though the accused was arrested on May 31 of 2024 on his return from Germany. This trial actually shows how fast the courts can be. Reason for the statement is that within just over two months i.e by July 18 the entire proceedings were concluded having only 38 adjournments. The judgement was pronounced on August 2, 2025 after evaluation of 26 prosecution witnesses and 180 documents as told by Special Public Prosecutor Ashok Nayar to the media.

The judgement of the special court has convicted the former MP Prajwal Revanna to imprisonment for life and imposed Rs 5 lakh as fine, under section 376(2)(k), and imprisonment for life which shall mean remainder of natural life along with Rs 5 lakh fine under section 376(2)(n). A two year RI has also been given to Prajwal, with a fine of Rs 10,000 under section 506, imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of Rs 25,000 under section 201, and imprisonment of 3 yrs and fine of Rs 25,000 under section 66 E of IT Act.2
