OPERATION ABHYAAS: INDIA’S NATIONWIDE CIVIL DEFENSE DRILL

ABSTRACT

India launched a very major nationwide civil defense exercise which was known to be as Operation Abhyaas. This large-scale drill was done to check how prepared the country is in handling emergencies like natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and chemical accidents. The drill involved schools, hospitals, transport departments, police, and even regular citizens. It sent a strong message that India is becoming more serious about national safety and quick response.

 

INTRODUCTION

On May 5th 2025, India carried out Operation Abhyaas, one of the biggest civil defense drills in the country. It took place in 50 cities to say the least including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and many other smaller towns. The main aim was to create awareness among the public and to test the speed and coordination between emergency teams like the police, fire department, hospitals, and disaster response forces. Sirens were sounded, mock drills were held in schools, people were evacuated from offices, and rescue operations were carried out as part of the simulation.

The need for Operation Abhyaas came after several recent security threats and natural calamities in different parts of the country. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and NDRF were at the center of this operation, working closely with local authorities.

 

In places like Delhi, metro stations were cleared during mock terror attacks, while in coastal cities like Chennai and Kochi, tsunami evacuation drills were held. In some states, hospitals did emergency patient transfers, and airports practiced bomb threat responses. This drill helped test real-time communication between different departments, including how fast ambulances and fire brigades could reach.

 

The exercise also included common people, encouraging them to learn basic first-aid, evacuation steps, and emergency helpline numbers.

 

CONCLUSION

Operation Abhyaas was not just one drill, but message that India is alert and learning. It show that if anything bad happens, we not cry but act fast and smart. This exercise must be done more time in year and include more people so everyone know what to do. With world facing new threats everyday, India now one step ahead with this big effort.
