Update on the Issue –

On Thursday, the Supreme Court of India endorsed the central government’s proposal to annul the results of 1,563 candidates who received grace marks in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2024 and conduct a re-examination. The Supreme Court, while resolving a petition that contested the National Testing Agency’s (NTA) decision to grant compensatory marks to candidates at six centres due to lost time, approved the cancellation of the existing scorecards for these candidates. The re-examination for the 1,563 affected candidates is scheduled for June 23. Candidates who choose not to participate in the re-examination will have their original scores, excluding the grace marks, taken into account. The NTA conveyed that the results of the re-examination are anticipated to be announced by June 30, with undergraduate medical counselling slated to begin on July 6.

Background –

On June 4, 2024, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the results of the NEET UG examination, which were met with widespread disapproval from parents and students. Allegations arose regarding a purported paper leak at certain centres, where candidates reportedly achieved unusually high scores. Additional complaints were raised concerning the inflation of marks for students who received grace marks due to lost time during the examination.

In a prior hearing, the Supreme Court of India observed that the sanctity of the examination had been compromised and directed the NTA to provide explanations. Although the NTA denied the allegations of a paper leak and maintained that the integrity of the examination remained intact, it established a high-power committee to reassess the decision to award grace marks to candidates at six specific centres.

The NTA, in a press conference last week, justified the award of grace marks by referencing a previous Supreme Court judgment that addressed a similar issue of time loss faced by some candidates. However, the NTA did not disclose the precise formula utilized to determine the compensatory marks.
